Arms of God Beginner Guide: Survive Your First 10 Runs

I died to the first boss three times before I figured out weapon merging. I burned Cathedral currency on damage upgrades when movespeed would have saved me. I ignored the Sacred Crux for five runs because I didn't understand what it did. This guide is everything I wish someone had slapped into my face on day one.

Arms of God launched June 8, 2026 in Early Access. It's a bullet heaven roguelite with 4 Acts, 10 bosses, 10 characters, and 60+ weapons. The depth is real, but the onboarding is sparse. Here are 20 tips organized by how urgently you need them.

First 5 Minutes: The Absolute Essentials

1. Pick The Paladin. Three characters are unlocked by default. Pick the one with the shield icon. The Paladin's +20% HP and damage-while-standing-still passive gives you margin for error. The other starters (Inquisitor, Templar) are strong but less forgiving. You can switch later. Survive first.

2. Weapon merging is not optional. When you pick up a new weapon past your 5-slot limit, you must either replace an equipped weapon or merge the new one into an existing weapon. Merging sacrifices the donor and transfers its stats to the target. You should merge at every opportunity. Running with 5 unmerged weapons is like playing with half your potential damage.

3. The Sacred Crux is your sixth weapon. It sits in the center of your HUD with its own skill tree. It has two modes: Aura (damages everything nearby, applies status effects from equipped weapons) and Beam (pierces in a straight line through terrain). Toggle modes with the button shown on-screen. Upgrade it. It's not vanity — at max level, Aura mode applies burn, shock, AND weaken from your equipped weapons simultaneously.

4. Auto-aim is fine. There are five aiming modes. The default auto-aim works great on both mouse and controller. You can swap to manual aim for boss fights through the pause menu. Don't overthink this.

First 3 Runs: Surviving Act 1

5. Commit to one damage type early. If your first weapon drop is Fire, prioritize Fire weapons and Fire blessings for the rest of the run. Blessing pools are separated by damage type — spreading across Fire, Holy, and Shock means you'll have low-rank blessings in all three instead of max-rank in one. Max-rank Fire blessing is +60% fire damage. Rank 2 Fire + Rank 2 Holy is +20% to each. The math is brutal.

6. Movespeed is your most important stat. Faster than enemies = you don't get hit. Not getting hit is infinitely better than surviving a hit. Between runs, spend all Cathedral currency on Training Ground movespeed until it's maxed (+15%). HP second. Damage third.

7. Knockback weapons save lives. Having at least one weapon with knockback (Sanctified Buzzsaw, Blessed Mace, Flame Lance) creates space between you and enemies. Space is time. Time is dodging. Dodging is survival. A knockback weapon effectively increases your survivability by 30-50% compared to a pure damage weapon in the same slot.

8. The first boss telegraphs everything. The Act 1 boss (a large demonic knight) has three attacks, all telegraphed by a red zone on the ground or a wind-up animation. Watch the boss, not your character. Move perpendicular to its facing direction. Bring at least one weapon with range — melee-only against the first boss is a death sentence.

9. Dying is progress. Every death gives you Cathedral currency. Even a 3-minute run where you die in the second room earns currency. There is no wasted run in Arms of God. The game expects you to die and get stronger between attempts.

Runs 4-7: Reaching Act 2 Consistently

10. Merge by level 8-10. Your first merge should happen before the first elite enemy spawns (around level 8-10). Don't wait for a "perfect" donor. A common donor merged at level 8 is better than a legendary donor merged at level 25 because you benefit from the stat boost for 17 more levels.

11. Same-element merging has hidden bonuses. Merging Fire into Fire grants extra projectiles. Lightning into Lightning expands chain range. Holy into Holy increases pierce count. The game doesn't document this anywhere. I discovered it around hour 20 and it completely changed my merge priorities.

12. The Alchemy Chamber unlocks hidden blessing upgrades. After you've invested about 5 hours of currency into the Training Ground, start putting points into the Alchemy Chamber. It unlocks blessing rarity upgrades, duplicate blessing protection, and eventually the ability to reroll your blessing choices. These quality-of-life upgrades dramatically improve the consistency of your runs.

13. Blessings that modify behavior beat flat stat increases. Piercing projectiles, chain, bounce, AoE expansion — these change how your damage is delivered. A +10% damage blessing is mathematically fine. Piercing projectiles effectively doubles or triples your damage in dense waves. Take behavior modifiers over stat increases every time.

14. Stacking blessings are mostly traps. Blessings that say "kill X enemies for Y bonus" or "survive Z seconds for W bonus" require ramp-up time during which you're operating below your potential. Take unconditional blessings first. The exception: the stacking damage blessing on The Zealot specifically is worth it because Zealot's kit is built around ramping.

Runs 8-10: Breaking Into Act 3

15. Unlock The Stormcaller or The Inquisitor. By now you've cleared Act 1 enough times to unlock at least one new character. The Stormcaller (clear Act 1) and The Inquisitor (default unlocked if you didn't pick them) are the strongest progression characters. Switch off The Paladin once you can consistently reach Act 2.

16. The Armory unlocks 4-6 weapon slots. Training Ground basics maxed? Good. Now invest in the Armory until you unlock at least 4 weapon availability. Focus on weapons with natural piercing (Seraph's Judgment), chain (Stormcaller), or AoE (Ember Cannon). More weapon options means more consistent runs.

17. The Bell Tower unlocks new characters but don't rush it. New characters are fun but they don't make your existing characters stronger. Max Training Ground and get 4+ weapon slots before spending currency on character unlocks. A fully upgraded bad character outperforms a fresh "good" character.

18. Positioning beats DPS against bosses. Every boss in Acts 1-3 has attack patterns you can dodge by standing in the right place. Act 2 boss: stand slightly above or below (hitboxes are wider than tall). Act 3 boss: stay at mid-range (too close triggers AoE slam, too far triggers charge). Learning positioning is more valuable than grinding for 10% more damage.

Common Beginner Mistakes

Mistake: Investing in damage first. The Training Ground damage upgrade gives +10% at max. A single common damage blessing during a run gives +15%. Movespeed and HP are harder to get during runs and more impactful when you have them permanently.

Mistake: Holding merge donors. "I'll save this legendary donor for a better recipient later." Later never comes. Merge immediately. A merged weapon now clears rooms faster now, which earns more XP now, which gets you more blessings now. The snowball effect is real.

Mistake: Ignoring the mini-map. Enemies spawn off-screen but the mini-map shows red dots before they appear. Glance at it every 5-10 seconds to anticipate which direction the next wave comes from. This alone will save you from 30% of surprise deaths.

Mistake: Standing still during wave rooms. Even with The Paladin's damage-while-standing-still passive, you should be moving. Standing still means enemies surround you. Once surrounded, no amount of damage saves you. Keep moving, kite enemies into clusters, then AoE them down.

Mistake: Skipping the pause menu. You can pause at any time (single-player). Use it. Need to check your blessing list? Pause. Need to think about which weapon to merge? Pause. Boss fight getting intense and you need a breather? Pause. The game respects your time.

Progression Roadmap

MilestoneExpected PlaytimeWhat to Do
---------
First boss kill1-3 runsPick Paladin, merge weapons, don't stand still.
Clear Act 13-5 runsCommit to one damage type, unlock Stormcaller.
Clear Act 25-10 runsMax Training Ground movespeed, unlock 4 weapon slots.
Reach Act 310-15 runsSwitch to Inquisitor or Stormcaller, invest in Alchemy Chamber.
Clear Act 315-25 runsBlessing rarity upgrades, dupe protection, consistent builds.
Clear Act 425-40 runsFull build knowledge, optimal merge timing, boss pattern memorization.

These are averages. Some players clear Act 4 in 15 runs. Some take 60. The Cathedral meta-progression means every player eventually gets strong enough — it's just a question of when.

One Last Thing

The soundtrack is by Ivory Tower Soundworks and it's a DOOM-style metal score. The developer, Dominik Sójka (Dark Jay Studio), is a solo Polish developer who's active on the Steam forums and responsive to bug reports. The game is Early Access with a full 1.0 release planned for Q4 2026 or Q1 2027, including console ports to Switch, Xbox, and PlayStation.

If you buy this in Early Access, you're supporting a solo developer who clearly poured years into this project. The game is polished, the depth is real, and the difficulty curve is fair. Enjoy the grind.
